Company History

Ballet Etudes Company, founded by Susana Prieto in 1974, is South Florida's premier classical ballet company. Its mission statement is to preserve, promote, and present the ballet classics for the South Florida community. Continuing in the line of the world's great classical ballet companies, Prieto adheres to the traditions of her Cuban heritage and brings the world’s greatest ballets to the South Florida community. Prieto took her first ballet classes in Cuba and continued her ballet training in Coral Gables with Sonia Diaz and Martha del Pino at La Academia Cubana de Ballet. Later Prieto became a soloist in Ballet Concerto Company, but felt the need to teach and direct her own company. In the mid 1970’s she founded Ballet Etudes in the city of Hialeah and not long after, Ballet Etudes Company was born.

From the earliest, Prieto and Ballet Etudes Company danced at various venues throughout Miami-Dade County, performing such classics as Giselle, Les Sylphides and The Nutcracker. Janet Shibata, Elizabeth Lang, David Cuevas, Peter Linares and David Loring were the first guest artists from American Ballet Theatre to dance with Ballet Etudes Company. Ballet Etudes would later have the pleasure to dance with Cheryl Yeager, Wes Chapman, Amanda McKerrow, John Gardner, Dagmar Moradillos, Charles Askegard, Maria Kowroski, Sofiane Sylve and Darci Kistler. The Company performed for decades at the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami Beach and now performs at Miami-Dade County Auditorium, Colony Theater on Lincoln Road, Hialeah Performing Arts Center, and the Miramar Cultural Center as well.

2014 marks Ballet Etudes’ 40th Anniversary season as well as other important steps in the company’s growth. This season has already seen the premiere of an original ballet by Prieto, "Little Red Riding Hood and the Enchanted Forest" as part of the family and community outreach performance series known as Sunday Afternoon at the Ballet. In April's Royal Ballet Gala, international guest artists Michelle Saramago and Fernando Maciel brought the famous Romeo and Juliet Pas de Deux to the Miramar stage for the first time, as well as for the first time in the Company's history.

Other exciting developments are in the works for Ballet Etudes Company! Several new ballets for the Company's repertoire and original works are in development for the 2014-2015 Season. Please check back for further information on this front.
